If you’re looking for some compact espresso machines, the Jura Ena Micro 1 and 5 are the top-rated recommendations. Both share a wide range of similarities in functionality and design.
The Ena Micro 5 is the winner since it’s an excellent option with a dual-spout design for those prioritizing simplicity and a smaller footprint. The Ena Micro 1 is almost similar to the Ena Micro 5 in design and functionality, but it only comes with one spout.

Jura Ena Micro 1 Vs 5: Differences
The Ena Micro 5 won 1-0 against the Ena Micro 1. Keep reading to delve into the differences between these espresso machines!
Design & Convenience
Winner: Ena Micro 5
Dimensions & User Interface
Jura Ena Micro 5 | Jura Ena Micro 1 | |
---|---|---|
Dimensions | 9 × 12.7 × 17.5 inches | 9 × 12.7 × 17.5 inches |
Weight | 19.6 lb | 19.2 lbs |
Both the Jura Ena Micro 1 and Ena Micro 5 show Jura’s signature sleek and modern design, blending seamlessly into contemporary kitchen spaces. The two machines have the same dimensions, and the Ena Micro 1 is a little bit lighter, but it’s not a matter.
Spout & Cup Clearance
Jura Ena Micro 5 | Jura Ena Micro 1 | |
---|---|---|
Spigot Type | Dual | Single |
Cup Clearance | 1.2–4.4 inches | 2.5–5.5 inches |
The biggest difference I can see between these Juras is their spigot types. While the Ena Micro 1 comes with a single dispensing spout, the Ena Micro 5 is equipped with a dual spout. That means the Ena Micro 5 can brew two cups at once and save you time!
Like other Jura super-automatic models, the spouts of both Ena Micro 1 and 5 are height-adjustable. This intelligent feature works flawlessly and helps me have an excellent espresso with lots of crema.
Cleaning & Maintenance
Winner: Tie
Both come in self-cleaning mechanisms upon startup and shutdown. This is my favorite feature in these models. Maintaining these Juras is a breeze – simply ensure the grounds are emptied and the trays, along with the water reservoir, stay clean. The Ena will alert you when it’s due for a cleaning cycle.
To initiate this, place one of the provided cleaning tablets into the top-mounted grounds slot and let the ENA handle the rest. It will also notify you when the water filter needs replacement. Keeping these simple tasks in check ensures your machines’ function smoothly.
The cleaning process is quick, about 15 minutes. Also, the cleaning cycle is not too frequent, about once every two weeks, and I am satisfied with that.
Jura Ena Micro 1 Vs 5: Similarities
Built-In Grinder
Both machines are equipped with an Aroma+ burr conical grinder. Conical burr grinders produce a more uniform and consistent grind size compared to blade grinders or flat burr grinders. Consistency is crucial in espresso brewing to ensure an even extraction and balanced flavor.
Also, conical burr grinders generate less heat during the grinding process compared to flat burr grinders. Heat can negatively impact the flavor of the coffee by causing the oils to evaporate. By minimizing heat, conical grinders help preserve the aromatic compounds in the coffee.
Although Aroma+ is not the newest generation grinder, it still works perfectly. You can also adjust the grinding setting with 5 different levels.
Brewing System
The Ena Micro 1 and 5 brew espresso in an almost similar way. They use a pre-infusion process that moisturizes the coffee grounds with a small amount of water. This process is also known as the Intelligent Pre-Brew Aroma System (IPBAS). Following the short pre-infusion phase, they both extract espresso with a maximum pressure of 15 bars.
Heating System
Both come in a single stainless steel thermoblock boiler. In contrast to the traditional boiler, a thermoblock operates by drawing water directly from the tank, guiding it through a complex network of pipes within the thermoblock, and heating it before delivering it to the group head. By the time the water reaches the group head, it has attained a sufficiently high temperature for brewing coffee.
The most noticeable advantages of this heating system are that it is energy-efficient and heats water quickly. However, a single thermoblock boiler also means that you have to wait between brewing and steaming processes since the same boiler is used for both functions. This limitation can be inconvenient if you want to make multiple drinks in quick succession.
Water Reservoir & Bean Hopper
Ena Micro 1 | Ena Micro 5 | |
---|---|---|
Water Reservoir | 1.1 liter | 1.1 liter |
Bean Hopper | 0.13 liter | 0.13 liter |
The only modification I desire is a larger water reservoir. With a capacity of 1.1 liters, you will need to refill it many times if your family’s coffee consumption is large. But trust me, this will be truly annoying.
These machines also have a filter holder for the CLARIS Blue filter cartridge, which enhances the taste of your espresso by reducing impurities and minerals that might affect the flavor. This is particularly important in areas with hard water, as minerals can negatively impact the taste of the coffee.
But the ongoing cost of purchasing replacement water filters can add up over time. So if you are unwilling to pay more cost for this filter, you should use filtered or bottled water as an alternative.
In addition, because it was positioned at the back of the machine, it was frustrating and took more effort to pull the machine out, remove the water tank, and fill it with water.
Pre-Programmed Coffee Options & Programmability
Jura Ena Micro 1 | Jura Ena Micro 5 |
---|---|
Coffee Espresso Ristretto | Coffee Espresso Ristretto |
Both Ena Micro 1 and 5 are equipped with three basic coffee options. However, for their expensive price tags, I would desire more than just three. These machines also do not have a milk-frothing system, which means they cannot offer milk-based drinks. Compared to other models in the same price range, these drink options are quite restrictive.
When it comes to making your coffee just the way you like it, you can choose between two different strengths, adjust how much coffee is in your cup, and even change how hot it brews.
Bypass Doser
These Juras have a bypass for pre-ground coffee, which is a cool feature for me. This comes in handy if, for example, someone in your family or your guest likes decaf and the regular coffee grinder is full.
It’s also time-saving in some cases. All you need to do is scoop in the pre-grounded coffee and wait for seconds to have a great coffee.
