When finding a reliable coffee maker from Philips, you probably find and wonder between Philips 1200 vs 2200. If it were me, I would choose the Philips 2200. So are there any differences between them so that I can come to this conclusion? Let’s find out in this article.

The 1200-series serves as the foundation for Philips’ lineup of super-automatic coffee machines. And Philips has made enhancements to develop subsequent models. In this way, the Philips 2200 is the next iteration following the Philips 1200. Essentially, when comparing Philips 1200 to 2200, they are quite similar.

However, I strongly recommend bypassing the 1200-series, as I believe it has become somewhat obsolete. It is the same as the Philips 2200 (the classic milk frother version), which is available at the exact same price point. So, why not opt for the Philips 2200, the update version, right?

Philips 1200 vs 2200: Review & Comparison

I won’t assign a final score to this comparison because the distinctions between the Philips 1200 and 2200 models remain somewhat insignificant. However, as previously mentioned, the Philips 2200 appears to be the superior choice between the two.

Please continue reading as I will delve further into the review and clarify the differences that set the Philips 1200 and 2200 apart.

Coffee Flavor & Brewing System

Grinder

The Philips 1200 and 2200 both use a ceramic flat burr grinder. The ceramic flat burr grinders are often praised for their quiet operation, but unfortunately, I can’t say the same for the Philips 1200 and 2200. These machines run really loud. They’re even louder than some of their conical burr competitors.

On the bright side, both the Philips 1200 and 2200 offer 12 different grind settings, which is quite versatile. They can truly grind coffee beans into a fine consistency. For the best results, I recommend setting the grinder to its finest setting and sticking with it unless you’re dealing with exceptionally dark roasted beans, which tend to require a coarser grind.

Heating System

Another aspect worth considering with the Philips 1200 and 2200 coffee machines is their heating system. Both of these machines use a single boiler heating system, and my experience with it left me with some observations.

The heating system takes about a minute or two to heat up, which falls somewhere in the middle of the spectrum – not exceptionally fast, but not painfully slow either.

And the temperature controller is also a weakness of these two machines. The maximum drink temperature these machines can achieve is around 165 degrees Fahrenheit. While this temperature is undoubtedly hot, it’s not piping hot like I want it to be. And the drink tends to cool down relatively quickly.

Design & Convenience

Speaking of their aesthetics, I have to say I like the way the Philips 1200 and 2200 look. While they are primarily made of plastic, they exude a sturdy and well-designed appearance that I genuinely appreciate.

In a market where many superautomatic machines try to hide behind plastic and mimic the look of metal with brushed silver finishes, I find the Philips approach refreshingly straightforward. They embrace high-quality plastic and manage to make it look appealing without resorting to gimmicky metal imitations.

In addition, the Philips 1200 and 2200 are identical in dimensions and weight. They are conveniently compact and easy to fit under kitchen cabinets. However, there’s one minor inconvenience I’ve encountered. Whenever I have to refill the coffee beans, I need to slide the machine out slightly to access the bean hopper. It’s not a major issue, but it’s something to keep in mind when considering the placement of these machines in your kitchen.

When it comes to capacity, both the Philips 1200 and 2200 coffee machines share identical characteristics. I found their capacity to be quite impressive, considering their compact design.

The water tank, drip tray, and coffee waste container can all be easily accessed from the front of the machines. This design choice makes maintenance and cleaning a breeze, as you won’t need to constantly move the machines around or reach behind them to perform these tasks.

User Interface

The user interface on both the Philips 1200 and 2200 coffee machines is also similar, and I found it to be pretty intuitive. I’m not going to say it’s the greatest ever, but it’s simple enough that I believe most people can approach these machines and get the hang of it after just a couple of tries.

Their buttons include one-touch drink buttons and buttons for adjusting coffee strength and temperature.

Their user interface also includes indicators that provide valuable information about the machine’s status, such as when it’s time to empty the coffee waste container or refill the water tank.

Philips 1200 and 2200 offer a somewhat limited selection of preset drink options. They typically include presets for Espresso, Coffee, Hot water, 2× Espresso, and 2× Coffee. You can consider Philips 3200 LatteGo if you want more preset drinks.

However, you can absolutely make other drinks and not stop at just Coffee or Espresso. They have a steam wand and a hot water spout. You can use the steam wand for frothing milk for cappuccino or latte, and the hot water spout can be used to dilute your coffee or make tea.  But this does require some extra steps and manual effort compared to the convenience of one-touch presets.

Previously, there was a distinction between the Philips 1200 and 2200 coffee machines. The Philips 1200 lacked the option to select aroma strength. However, in the latest update as of 2023, the Philips 1200 now offers the same capability as the 2200, with both machines allowing you to adjust brewing temperature, aroma strength, and drink volume, all at 3 different levels.

The Philips 1200-series only has one version with a classic steam wand, whereas the 2200-series offers both a classic wand and a LatteGo variation. For the sake of fairness, this article will focus on comparing the Philips 1200 and Philips 2200 with the classic steam wand.

Their steam wand is Panarello-type. Using this steam wand means that you have to hold your cup for it to froth your milk. The air is automatically injected into your milk through the hole on the Panarello cover.

When it comes to milk quality, the Panarello wand on these machines delivers quite impressive results. While they may not reach the absolute peak of excellence that some coffee connoisseurs might desire, they still manage to perform admirably.

You can get a creamy and thick foam easily, which is particularly well-suited for crafting cappuccinos. However, they fall short when it comes to producing microfoam, which is essential for intricate and detailed latte art.
