I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

I tried both the Breville Duo Temp Pro vs Bambino to find not only the most affordable espresso machine but also the fastest. What I found is that the Breville Duo Temp Pro makes espresso drinks just like a barista. So does the Bambino but the Duo Temp Pro has includes a few extra features that give it an edge.

With the Breville Bambino, you can pull multiple espresso shots and froth the milk effectively. It has fast and efficient temperature control with a powerful yet low-pressure 9 bar pump system. This is good for a beginner who wants to know a bit more about espresso without too many complicated features. The Duo Temp Pro is a more expensive pick which is not such a bad thing when you consider its brewing speed and performance.

Breville Duo Temp Pro vs Bambino: Differences

The Duo Temp Pro wins 5 – 2 against the Bambino as it features low-pressure pre-infusion, a steady heating system, and a long-lasting stainless steel design. It makes espresso brewing simple, direct, and consistent, even for a beginner.

1. Bar Pump System

The Winner: Breville Bambino

Breville Bambino Bar Pump System

Though both espresso machines use low-pressure pre-infusion, the Duo Temp Pro features a 15 bar Italian pump mechanism while the Bambino uses a 9 bar pump. A 9 bar pump pulls excellent espresso shots because it uses less but quick pressure to extract maximum flavor and body of espresso.

The 9 bar pump also favors the compact and portable design specifications of the Bambino. Making it the better option out there for a beginner to practice espresso without making any significant blunders in strength and volume.

The 15 bar is also a professional standard as far as barista-grade espresso makers are concerned. But it’s certainly not as efficient at maintaining proper pressure as the 9 bar. In the case of home espresso brewers, less is more. Bambino, with its quick 4-button interface, lets you pull a single or double shot of espresso at a high water temperature of 200-degrees. It’s fast and you can use all types of coffee to get a better espresso taste and aroma.

2. Water Reservoir

The Winner: Breville Duo Temp Pro

Many people prefer larger water storage in compact and lightweight housing. Comparing the Breville Duo Temp Pro vs Bambino, I found the larger capacity of the Duo Temp Pro (61 ounces) is a better competitor than the Bambino’s which is 47 ounces.

On account of the Bambino small design, the water tank needs to be regularly refilled which may be a letdown for someone who drinks multiple cups of espresso a day. But you should know that the water tank, on both espresso machines, is easy to refill and convenient to wash. You can easily remove the water reservoir. The Duo Temp Pro comes with a handy handle that allows better accessibility.

3. Size

The Winner: Breville Bambino

This brings me to another point of difference between the Breville Duo Temp Pro and Bambino. The height on both machines is almost identical. What’s different, and you’ll notice this immediately by appearance, is that the Duo Temp Pro is wider so it takes up more space on the counter.

The Duo Temp Pro is 2 inches wider/broader than the Bambino while the difference in height is less than an inch.

The Bambino is more compact in that it occupies very little space so it’s easy to move around. You can place it on the dining table or on the kitchen island while brewing. Then keep it back in a cabinet or storage for safekeeping.

You can’t do the same for the Duo Temp Pro. It needs one fixed place. But overall, it’s perfectly sized for a home brewer for daily use.

4. Heating System

The Winner: Breville Duo Temp Pro

The Breville Duo Temp Pro uses a Thermocoil heating system with a stainless steel water tube. This compared to Bambino’s ThermoJet heating system is more long-lasting and consistent.

But one thing that sets the Bambino apart is that it comes with a fast heat-up time that takes only 3 seconds to start brewing. Though the Duo Temp Pro lacks faster heat-up, it does offer excellent brewing and steaming temperatures with quick transitions. Features like automatic purge settings make the Duo Temp Pro more barista-grade than ThermoJet. And they tend to outlast ThermoJet which works fast but only for a limited time until you need to replace it!

5. Steam Wand

The Winner: Breville Duo Temp Pro

The Breville Duo Temp Pro features a manual microfoam steam wand with auto purge settings. The auto-purge settings maintain and regulate better temperature control between brewing and steaming so you never lose time or temp.

Both espresso machines have steam wands that are manual but learning how to control the steam wand on the Duo Temp Pro is easier than Bambino. The swivel steam wands are easy to control and adjustable with manual temperature settings. You can control how much foam/texture you need for your milk.

I think this is just as important that the Duo Temp Pro comes with a stainless steel pitcher for easy steaming and the Bambino does not. You need to buy a stainless steel jug separately.

6. Water Filter

The Winner: Breville Duo Temp Pro

It’s not very common for an affordable espresso machine to feature a water filter. But luckily the Breville Duo Temp Pro does. The water tank features a water filter holder and water filter for longer-lasting performance.

In the Bambino, you will have to get the water filter installed and pay extra for it if you want the machine to not get clogged up by mineral deposits. Hard water is the silent killer of espresso makers so use filtered or RO water to use the Bambino if you don’t want to have a water filter installed.

For this, the Duo Temp Pro is very helpful because it provides a high-quality water filter to improve the taste of water, and as a result, of your espresso shots.

7. Pressurized vs Non-Pressurized Baskets

The Winner: Breville Duo Temp Pro

Breville Duo Temp Pro Baskets

The Duo Temp Pro comes with a pressurized and non-pressurized portafilter basket. The Bambino only offers a pressurized portafilter. The difference lies in how creative you want to get in making espresso.

The Bambino, in comparison, is more straightforward and intuitively automated. But if you want a more nuanced flavor, and a bit more control over your espresso, the Duo Temp Pro is the pick for you.

With the option to choose from the pressurized and non-pressurized baskets, you can tweak the strength and shot volume of the espresso in the Duo Temp Pro. With the Bambino, the espresso taste will be just as good but without the additional customization of a non-pressurized basket.

So this is a matter of personal preference and what’s convenient for you!

Breville Duo Temp Pro vs Bambino: Similarities

For easier and faster espresso extraction, both the stainless steel Duo Temp Pro and Bambino are good home espresso brewers. If you always find yourself getting confused or intimidated by semi-auto machines with too many variables to keep up with, both these espresso machines are beginner-friendly and affordable.

They also share quite many features such as Low-Pressure Pre-Infusion, a Hot Water Dispenser, Dose Control, and Manual Control. For dose control, both machines brew between 18g to 22g freshly ground coffee for a stronger taste and aroma.

You can control how much espresso you want to extract per cup – be it for a single or double shot of espresso! The dial controls on the Duo Temp Pro and the 2 volume buttons on the Bambino let you do so effortlessly!

Both machines also feature a hot water dispenser through the steam wand. This means you can make delicious Americanos without worrying about warming up the water in an oven.
