Nespresso Citiz vs Inissia: 2 Compact And Cut-price Capsule Espresso Makers. Which One Is Worth Buying?

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

Nespresso Citiz vs Inissia has been giving me a hard time to evaluate, given that they are both well-designed machines with very standard functions at a low price range. But after many considerations, my final winner is De’Longhi Nespresso CitiZ.

De’Longhi Nespresso CitiZ boasts of a big 33.8oz water tank which allows less frequent refills. It can brew balanced and refreshing espresso flavor without causing too much noise. This model is perfect for small spaces, and I highly recommend it to single users or college students.

As for the runner-up De’Longhi Nespresso Inissia, it doesn’t lack in brewing delicious espressos and coffees. Its incredibly compact design and low price also are good points to consider. But, its design doesn’t give me a convenient and sturdy feel as the model above.

Nespresso Citiz vs Inissia: Differences

De’Longhi Nespresso CitiZ wins 3 to 1 against De’Longhi Nespresso Inissia. The pair brews delicious and aromatic espressos with the assistance of the capsules’ quality. But, Citiz has a sturdier design and is more convenient to use, and I will get into detail now.

Coffee Flavor: Tie

+Heating system

Thermoblock is the heating system that these espresso machines share. According to the advertisements, it allows users to get espresso as quickly as possible.

But how does each model performs temperature and efficiency-wise? From my experience, after many brewing sessions, 30s is not enough for both models to deliver hot and steaming espressos. 2 minutes will be an ideal heat-up time for users who prefer hot instead of lukewarm coffee.

Overall, I don’t notice any difference in terms of heating performance. If you preheat the machines or the cups themselves, you can get hotter coffees from these capsules devices.

+Brewing technique

These machines use the same 19 bars pump pressure to extract espressos. The pressure helps extract every flavor, and it’s strong enough to ensure that the entire capsule is used thoroughly and efficiently. Both machines have 2 one-touch buttons for espressos and lungos.

How will I describe the flavor in relation to the brewing technique?

This is what I get from De’Longhi Nespresso CitiZ: fresh, aromatic, robust, and authentic espressos. I don’t notice any strange smell or unpleasant notes in its flavor. The espressos aren’t sour nor too bitter, even though I do notice that it is slightly more bitter than Inissia’ espressos, which is perfectly fine for users who prefer strong drinks. The crema is velvety too.

With De’Longhi Nespresso Inissia, the flavor also is very authentic and smooth. The espressos have a pleasing aroma, and the crema is thicker than what I get from Citiz. Overall, this device is more suitable for users who prefer mellow drinks.

Utilities: De’Longhi Nespresso CitiZ

Firstly, Citiz has a bigger water tank that holds up to 33.8 oz of water while Inissia carries 23.7 oz. I’m not indicating that the small tank of Inissia is a minus point because most users who look for capsule espresso machines prefer a compact design. But for me, there is no doubt that a slightly bigger tank is more convenient, given that we have to refill less often.

Secondly, Delonghi Citiz has a 2 tiers drip tray, which can accommodate different cup heights.

Lastly, it also has more capacity to store used capsules (11). So I empty the container less frequently.

Cleaning & Maintain: Tie

I believe you already know that cleaning a capsule machine is easy. To clean Citiz and Inissia, all we have to do is use a cleaning capsule the same way we use a coffee capsule with them.

The system will brew the soap and run through the coffee path to wash any leftover coffee and smell. I recommend doing it once or twice each week.

Design & Material: De’Longhi Nespresso CitiZ

I prefer Delonghi Citiz’s design since it has a casual capsule slot. I just flip the lid and slide a capsule in each time I brew. On the contrary, Inissia uses a lever opener which I have to flip up and down to open the lid of the capsule slot. It takes more space and is less convenient, so this is a major buzzkill for me.

Nespresso Citiz vs Inissia: Similarities

De’Longhi Nespresso CitiZ and De’Longhi Nespresso Inissia have two similarities that I want to pinpoint. Find out below.

Automatic Power Off

Both models are energy efficient thanks to their automatic power-off function. After 9 minutes of no brewing or cleaning, they shut themselves off automatically without requiring extra setup.

Heat-up time

Both De’Longhi Nespresso CitiZ and De’Longhi Nespresso Inissia take around 30s to heat up entirely for a brewing session, which is quite efficient since they are capsule machines. You won’t have to wait long before getting a cup of latte or cappuccino in the morning when you hurry to work.

Nevertheless, I suggest that you leave the devices on for 2 minutes before brewing if you really want to enjoy a hot and fuming cup of coffee.
