Delonghi ECP3420 Vs ECP3120: What Is The Difference?

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

Delonghi has launched several slightly different variants of the Delonghi ECP line. They are compact, inexpensive and easy-to-use machines, making them an ideal choice to start with. These models are very similar in terms of functionality, and without digging too deep, telling them apart is almost solely based on appearance and color.

The Delonghi ECP3420 vs ECP3120, for instance, they are almost functionally identical, but the Delonghi ECP3120 features a full plastic body while there is more metal used in the Delonghi ECP3420. Additionally, the ECP3420 is equipped with a two-tiered drip tray, a feature absent in the ECP3120. These subtle distinctions contribute to the ECP3420 being a slightly superior choice.

Delonghi ECP3420 Vs ECP3120: Differences

The ECP3420 won 4-3 against the ECP3120. I’m excited to dive into a detailed comparison of these two machines and share my own experiences with them right here!

Coffee Flavor & Brewing System

Winner: Tie

Built-in Grinder

None of the Delonghi ECP machines come with a built-in grinder since they are budget machines rather than high-end ones. The bad thing is that you’ll have to invest extra in a separate grinder, not to mention find additional space for it in your kitchen.

However, looking at the brighter side, this opens up a vast array of options for you. The market is flooded with countless grinder models, each with its own unique features and price points, so you can find the perfect match for your DeLonghi ECP machine.

Dosing & Tamping

Here’s another shared feature of these De’Longhi ECP machines: a 3-in-1 pressurized portafilter. Now, you might be wondering, “What exactly does that mean?” In simple terms, it’s a versatile holder that can accommodate single shots, double shots, or even easy-serve coffee (ESE) pods.

3-in-1 pressurized portafilter
3-in-1 pressurized portafilter

Yes, these machines have the option to use ESE pods, which are just like the caffeine version of tea bags. While it’s true that they might not deliver the same taste as freshly ground espresso beans, they can be pretty convenient, especially when you’re in a hurry or don’t want to deal with the mess of ground coffee.

Another aspect of these ESE pods that I really appreciate is their environmental friendliness. They use filter paper instead of single-use plastic, so you can enjoy your espresso while being mindful of the planet.

Both use a 51mm portafilter, which, in my experience, can be a bit tricky to handle. Filling it with coffee often becomes a delicate task since it’s relatively easy to overflow it, leading to a messy situation.

Their tampers are made of plastic, and honestly, this is a big downside for me since they lack the sturdiness and heft needed for an effective tamp. If you’re serious about your espresso, you might want to consider investing in Delonghi’s better-quality tamper

Heating System

They both feature a single highly durable stainless steel boiler with a relatively quick heat-up time. We’re talking about approximately 4-5 minutes to reach the ideal temperature to pull the first shot. That’s quite speedy, especially when you compare it to some manual espresso makers out there that can take upwards of ten minutes or more to heat up.

Brewing System

It’s really no surprise that these espresso machines boast 15 bars of pressure. The ideal range for extracting full flavor and getting that picture-perfect crema on top is generally between 9 and 15 bars. Anything less than 9 bars can’t produce authentic espresso, while anything above 15 bars is overkill. But they don’t have a pre-infusion function, which is a shame.

Design & Convenience

Weight10.8 lbs9 lbs

These machines look decent and are small enough to fit into any kitchen counter and enjoy coffee every day. And as mentioned earlier, the ECP3120 is mainly made from durable ABS plastic, while you can find more stainless steel in the ECP3420, giving the latter a more sophisticated look and adding to its durability.

Their user interfaces are simple and user-friendly, with only one large knob to control everything. This could make your morning coffee routine feel less like a chore, as it spares you from spending minutes navigating through a complex array of buttons and settings.

Spout Type & Cup Clearance

These machines provide more than enough clearance to fit most espresso cups. But if you need more room for some reason, that’s when the ECP3420’s two-tiered drip tray comes in. You can remove the drip tray to reveal a second layer underneath where you can put a larger cup of coffee.

Water Reservoir & Bean Hopper

Their water containers are easy to access and remove, so refilling or cleaning them isn’t a chore. All you’ve got to do is pop the tank out, refill it with fresh water, and put it back in. There’s no water filter included with them, so you’re best off going with bottled or pre-filtered water.

Milk Frothing System

Winner: Tie

Both of these espresso machines come equipped with a manual steam wand, but it’s worth noting that they don’t include a milk pitcher. This means you’ll have to get one separately if you don’t already have it.

both use a manual steam wand
Both use a manual steam wand

About the steam wands themselves, they are somewhat weak, from my experience. This means you shouldn’t set your expectations too high to achieve that perfect fine microfoam you might be accustomed to from your local coffee shop.

These steam wands can certainly help you make a decent foam for a cappuccino, but when it comes to crafting a proper latte with silky, fine microfoam, they might fall a bit short. So if you’re really into the art of latte-making and want to replicate the quality of a coffee shop, you might need to look into higher-end machines.

Drink Options & Programmability

Winner: Tie

Given their price point, it’s not surprising to me that they don’t feature a long list of one-touch drink options. They just have two on-touch options: espresso and hot water, and you need to froth milk yourself with their wands for milk-based drinks. The fact that they can quickly dispense hot water through their steam wands is a handy feature, especially for those who are also fans of tea.

Programmability

These machines give you limited room for experimentation with the brewing process. The only control you have is to rotate the knob to the coffee symbol to initiate extraction, and then, when satisfied with the shot volume, turn it to the ON position to halt the flow. The simplicity could be a great starting point for beginners, but it might be a bit limiting for those who love to tinker with every aspect of their brew.
