Gaggia Brera vs Classic – Super-Automatic Or Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine?

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

The releases of innovative and fully automatic coffee makers against classic models have led to the debate between Gaggia Brera vs Classic. So should you still go ahead with super-automatic Brera or simply just choose the more traditional and affordable semi-automatic Gaggia Classic?

Gaggia Brera is the ultimate winner for me. This machine has every necessary tool compacted into one body: solid and adjustable grinder, consistent brew group, quick milk frother, and efficient operation. This is the type of machine that i would recommend to every baristas and homeowner.

Classic is an affordable model, and from its name, you can tell that it offers classic brewing options. It doesn’t come with many additional features, but with Classic, you can enjoy the giant 2.1L water tank and consistent espresso extraction.

Gaggia Brera vs Classic: Differences

Gaggia Brera wins 3 -1 against Classic thanks to its intuitive operation, convenient built-in grinder, and easy control. I truly recommend this machine to beginners who want to make an investment in a long-term product.

Design

Both Gaggia Classic and Brera are long-lasting, durable espresso machines built with sturdy stainless steel. Heavy-duty build quality with a classic appearance. However, Classic looks more commercial, thus traditional while Brera is more contemporary, thus modern.

Now let’s compare the dimensions and weight of the two units…

Gaggia Classic dimensions are 9.5 inches x 8 inches x 14.2 inches. The weight is 20 pounds. (This is a more compact, therefore space-saving espresso machine perfect for smaller kitchen spaces)

Gaggia Brera dimensions are 12.4 inches x 10 inches x 17.5 inches. The weight is around 18 pounds (just only slightly lighter in weight than Classic).

Moving on to the water reservoir capacity – Classic has a 72-ounce water tank while Brera is 40 ounces only.

Steam Wand

The advanced Pannarello steam wand is a part of both Gaggia Brera and Classic. That means with both, you get to create rich, creamy foam for your favorite specialty beverages like cappuccino, latte, etc. You can not only dispense steam and froth but also hot water.

Ease Of Use

The simple, intuitive interface of Gaggia Brera is more preferred as it comes with an LED display and easy-to-use buttons for simplifying your brewing process, in the case of both customized and basic beverages.

As for Gaggia Classic, the controls, even though easy to operate, take the form of snap rocker switches. Meaning you have to flip them to start brewing, steaming, and performing other such functions.

It’s pretty obvious that the Brera experience is more advanced and streamlined while Classic is plain, old commercial-style brewing

Advanced Technology And Extra Features

Needless to say, a super-automatic espresso machine (Gaggia Brera) features more automation than a semi-automatic espresso machine (Gaggia Classic). Brera has a phenomenal Adapting System and Rapid Steam along with a built-in ceramic (better than steel) burr grinder.

With the integrated grinder, you can use whole bean coffee with Brera. And then the Adapting System comes into the picture with its automatic ability to adjust the grinding operation based on the coffee bean you’re using. And finally, the Rapid Steam function is as rapid as just under 10 seconds.

In the case of Gaggia Classic, the only thing I found to be extremely practical is the inclusion of a dual heating element. So the machine gets brew-ready in just 5 minutes and steam-ready in 20 seconds only. However, there is no built-in grinder, nor Adapting System, or any additional feature.

Gaggia Brera vs Classic – What Other Have to Say

Brera, even though the more advanced and automated model, prepares a small amount of coffee in comparison to Classic. But then the former makes those 2 small cups of coffee automatically after GRINDING and brewing.

However, the latter prepares different amounts of freshly brewed coffee – it’s just that you have to grind your coffee beans separately or use pre-ground coffee.

Another most unfortunate thing about Brera is its extra upkeep, all because of the additional automation. But you know, if you’ve been a long-time Gaggia user, then making the switch to a super-automatic machine like Gaggia Brera without spending a HUGE sum of money is actually a very sweet deal. You’re bound to be impressed in terms of how Brera functions.

More specifically, the “A.I” on the built-in grinder adjusts the grinding process automatically depending on the coffee bean. Although you may take some time to get used to this particular feature.

All in all, the number of gripes (cannot produce a double shot in a single cycle, drip tray fills up very quickly, etc.) are higher in Brera than Classic simply because you expect MORE out of a super-automatic espresso machine like Gaggia Brera. Plus, you’re also paying more in that scenario.

What Is It Then?

Between the two, Brera and Classic, the former is a more popular choice simply because it’s equipped with a higher number of advanced features. Plus, quite surprisingly, it’s a super-automatic espresso machine that’s easier to operate as well. Even with a built-in coffee bean grinder, this coffee maker is convenient to use.

You can prepare your coffee with fresh beans and with tons of customization options to bring out a flavor you enjoy the most. Plus, the Pannarello steam wand just makes everything better in terms of producing the creamiest milk texture for cappuccinos, lattes, etc.

But then Brera Classic is also quite a superior pick in that it offers a much larger water reservoir capacity of 72 ounces. So you don’t have to go through the trouble of refilling the tank too ofen. Also, it’s a more space-saving and cost-friendly espresso machine.
