Delonghi EC155 vs EC155M Espresso Machine: Which One Is The Best?

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

It’s easier to choose between two products that are variations of the same models. In this case, it’s the Delonghi EC155 vs EC155M. Both are super-impressive and multi-functional. They feature a removable water tank and a triple filter holder for versatile use.

But the latter offers manual performance with water and steam temperature control. The former is the one which you can use if you want the machine to take care of every little detail of espresso making.

So the performance and functionality of both espresso makers depends on how involved you want to be. If you want something straightforward and effective, go for the EC155. But for better control and more accessibility, the EC155M is a great option.

Here are my thoughts on both espresso machines based on user-friendliness, quality, and taste.

The Delonghi EC155 uses a 15 bar pump system so it’s fast and efficient. It works for anyone who wants to pair steamed milk with espresso. This means you can make latte, cappuccino, flat white, mocha, and macchiato using this practical machine.

In terms of size, it’s compact and sleek. It doesn’t take up too much counter space. And you can easily store it away in the corner when not in use. That’s what I usually do because I don’t have much counter space to begin with.

The portafilter on the EC155 is the best feature. It sits comfortably onto the grouphead easily. And you have 2 primary filters and the ESE filter to use. The ESE filter is what you can use when you want to use coffee pods instead of ground coffee. So it’s definitely more useful in terms of flexibility and coffee styles.

In line with its compactness, the removable water tank has water level markings and a sturdy design. You can remove it to refill or clean as you like. And it snaps back on in a second. The best thing a machine as compact as EC155 can do is produce rich and delicious espresso automatically. And that’s precisely what this does.

It has extra bonus features like a built-in cup warmer, adjustable controls, and the exactly right temperature settings for espresso and milk. It’s fast, dynamic, and portable for everyday use.

Pros
  • Quick and smooth espresso shots.
  • Convenient and user-friendly for daily use.
  • It requires little maintenance.
  • Best starter espresso machine for home.
Cons
  • It vibrates a lot while brewing.
  • The cup warmer is slow.

The DeLonghi EC155M Manual Espresso Machine is not competing with barista-grade machines. It’s way more affordable, compact, and with basic features in mind. For a home espresso machine, the EC155M is the most practical and adored pick.

It consists of a self-priming function with dual thermostat setup. This puts you in the driver’s seat for water and steam temperature controls. Unlike the EC155 which stops automatically, you will have to stop the flow of espresso or steam when it brews.

The buttons and dial on the machine do not feel flimsy or cheap. They are sturdy and easy to access. There is a lot to learn but once you get the hang of it, it delivers delicious espresso every time.

Even for an entry-level machine, the EC155M is not so complicated. My tip to you would be to stop just right you fill an entire shot – single or double. The spout will continue to pour espresso in drops which will gradually fill up the rest of the shot.

And while that happens, you can froth the milk using air and steam. This is also with manual control so there is a bit of a learning curve here too.

The extra effort you put into this machine won’t be much of a problem. Because all the tweaking and adjusting will produce results that taste better and richer than standard coffee machines. And you don’t need to spend a fortune for it as well!

Pros
  • Stainless steel parts with upgraded steam wand.
  • High-quality and sturdy portafilter.
  • Modern, sleek, and incredibly compact.
Cons
  • Not much space for different cup sizes.
  • The steam wand is tricky to use at first.

Final Verdict

You can expect premium and professional espresso results in an espresso machine that costs 3-4 times less. But for a budget-friendly, entry-level espresso machine, the Delonghi EC155 and EC155M are perfect.

I realized that there is not a significant difference between these and machines that cost twice or 5 times as much. So it’s definitely a steal if you’re looking for a high-quality, convenient, and thoughtful espresso machine.

The EC155 offers less room for control than the EC155M. The ‘M’ in EC155M stands for ‘Manual’ so you can understand its selling point. That’s the only major difference you need to consider before choosing. The rest is up for grabs no matter which espresso maker you buy.
