EC685M kicks it out of the park with a 3-0 score in this battle against EC155. The machine offers users a barista-like experience while remaining beginner-friendly. It also steps into powersave mode automatically, has an anti-flow feature, and includes a convenient portafilter.

There’s something about EC685M ’s portafilter that takes my breath away. It has just the one 51mm non-pressurized double-shot portafilter. It is also compatible with different sizes and espresso pods. This means you can adjust the intensity of your espresso for espresso, cappuccino, and latte.
This is perhaps why I think of the EC685M as the “espresso lover’s paradise.”
Operation
The Delonghi EC685M Dedica Deluxe is a compact and sturdy pick. It invites you in with its sleek design and authentic tamping and brewing just like a barista. More than that, it’s automatic but it certainly doesn’t look like it. Which gives you an edge as an at-home espresso brewer because of its original vintage design.
The EC155 lets you control everything directly and effectively. You can switch the filter baskets from single, double, or espresso pods. The 15 bar pump system delivers smooth and tasty espresso even if you use pods instead of ground coffee.
The swivel jet frother is great for espresso beginners since it is sturdy and accessible. Granted that you will need to dial in the steam. But it’s not intimidating at all. You’ll probably spend a few extra minutes figuring the right steam dial setting for the first few times.
Delonghi EC155 vs EC685M: Similarities

I call the Delonghi EC155 the “beginner’s luck.” Want to know why? It’s because it is one of the most authentic entry-level espresso makers I’ve come across. It’ll make you feel like a pro at pulling espresso shots. Even if you’ve never used an espresso machine before.
It’s so simple and straightforward to use. For an at-home, affordable espresso maker, it uses high-quality parts and a powerful bar pump system to get the job done. There are no missing puzzles for you to figure out.
As for EC685M, this is a tough and straightforward espresso machine. It offers adjustable controls like the EC155. But, in my mind, it performs faster and more consistently than the EC155.
Cup Warmer
Espresso turns slightly bitter as it becomes colder and stale. So to keep it fresh and hot and rich in texture, flavor, and aroma, a cup warmer is necessary. While you steam your milk to your preferred creaminess and smooth texture, the cup warmer on the drip tray keeps your espresso hot.
EC685M’s cup warming tray is more potent and provides more heat than EC155 can. It sits on top of the machine and is unique and sturdy. It heats your average espresso cup or even a standard mug. It’s handy, barista-like, and intuitive.
However, there isn’t much space for the cups to sit, thus you can only warm 1 or 2 cups only. This applies to both coffee makers. Overall, i appreciate the intention of including this feature in both models, it is a nice touch, but it’s not very impressive.

Between the Delonghi EC155 vs EC685M, you can pick a high-quality and satisfying espresso machine. Both are easy to operate, within budget, and work perfectly well with traditional dark coffee roasts.
