Delonghi EC702 Vs EC155: Differences

The EC702 won 4-2 against the EC155. Now is the time for all the differences between them!

Coffee Flavor & Brewing System

Winner: Delonghi EC702

Built-in Grinder

Here’s the deal: these machines don’t come with a built-in grinder. So, if you’re eyeing one, be prepared to fork out some extra cash for a separate grinder. And let me tell you, pairing one of these machines with a top-notch grinder is essential for brewing coffee that could rival your favorite cafe!

A decent electric grinder might give you the grind essential for espresso, but it often costs more than the espresso machines themselves. You know, right? But if you’re working with a tight budget, you might want to consider a hand grinder.

Both are compatible with Easy Serve Espresso (ESE) pods. Certainly, pods are convenient, and I can see why some individuals are so enamored with the concept. But personally? I’m not sold on the idea of brewing stale coffee. Plus, all those single-use plastics are no friends to our mother nature. But, hey, it’s good to have options, right? And on those chaotic mornings when grinding beans feels like a Herculean task, even I can see the appeal of just popping in a pod and pressing a button.

Dosing & Tamping

Both come equipped with a 51-mm portafilter and allow you to brew single or double espresso shots. So whether it’s brewing back-to-back shots for a house full of espresso enthusiasts or just making sure you’re doubly caffeinated for that early morning meeting, they’ve got you covered.

both can brew double shots
Both can brew double shots

And like a good bean grinder, a tamper is a necessary part of a bean-to-cup machine. The EC702  and EC155 both include a plastic tamper. So if you’re serious about your espresso game (and I mean, who isn’t?), eventually switching to a stainless steel tamper is like leveling up in a tamping game.

Why? A stainless steel tamper doesn’t just look snazzy, but it also gives you a more consistent and even tamp. This means better espresso extraction and, ultimately, a superior cup of that liquid gold.

Heating System

These machines come with just one boiler, but hey, at least it’s made of stainless steel. You can’t expect the quick heating magic of thermocoil or thermoblock technology, but durable construction is a huge plus.

You might need to wait up to 15 minutes for these machines to heat up to the perfect espresso-brewing temperature. So, what to do? Simple! Turn on the machine, and then go about your morning routine – brush your teeth, pick out an outfit, and maybe do a little dance to your favorite tune. By the time the OK light starts flashing, you’re ready to pull your first shot.

And here’s a silver lining. Once you’ve endured those initial minutes of anticipation, these machines maintain the right water temperature between each cup. So you don’t have to wait for the boiler to heat up all over again.

Brewing System

The EC702 is on the edge with a pre-infusion function, while the EC155, sadly, misses out on this trick. “Pre-infusion? Is that some kind of espresso sorcery?” – let me demystify it for you.

Pre-infusion is a process where the machine releases a small amount of water onto the coffee grounds before full extraction. It allows the coffee to swell, release gases, and prepare itself to give you all its flavorful glory. It’s all about enhancing the extraction process, leading to a more balanced and evenly extracted espresso shot.

9 bars is often hailed as the ideal pressure for brewing espresso for that perfect, rich, and creamy shot. The EC702 and EC155 both come packed with a 15-bar pump, which might sound like overkill but isn’t a bad thing at all.

Design & Convenience

Dimensions & User Interface

Dimensions11. x 11.6 x 9.1 inches7.5 x 11.1 x 9.5 inches

The EC702 and EC155 are the antithesis of those bulky, space-hogging coffee makers that monopolize your counter surface. Instead, they’re tiny, compact, but mighty. They snugly fit into the tiniest of spaces, ensuring you don’t have to choose between a toaster and your caffeine fix.

Moving these machines around isn’t going to give you a workout. Whether you’re rearranging the kitchen or taking your espresso machine on a road trip, they won’t be a nuisance to transport.

Speaking of the control panel, if you find yourself breaking out in a cold sweat at the thought of complicated control panels and digital displays, these machines are like a soothing balm. There’s no flashy LED display to navigate, no barrage of buttons that feel like you need a pilot’s license to operate.

The EC155 has just one dial on the front – a single twist is all it takes to bring this machine to life or start your espresso journey. Meanwhile, the EC702 features a few more knobs and buttons – – no fuss, no muss.

Spout Type & Cup Clearance

The space under their portafilters isn’t somewhat of a letdown since it can fit all the espresso cups. And many people don’t realize that they can remove the drip tray to get enough space for taller glasses. So next time you want to use that lovely latte glass in your cupboard, remember this little hack.

Water Reservoir & Bean Hopper

Their tanks aren’t going to win any awards for size, but they’re perfectly adequate for one or two people. What’s more, their water tanks are removable, which is a huge plus. There is no need for cumbersome maneuvers or awkward attempts to pour water into a fixed tank. Just pull the tank out, fill it up at your sink, and pop it back in – easy as refilling a water bottle.

By the way, the EC702 comes with a water filter, which is not only readily available but also a breeze to replace. Now, you might be wondering, “Do I really need to use this water filter?” Here’s the scoop: while it’s not a must, it significantly cuts down on the amount of descaling needed. The filter also steps up the taste of your coffee.

Do you know how water can sometimes have a funky taste or smell, depending on where you live? This filter helps wave goodbye to those unwanted impurities, ensuring that what you’re tasting is pure, unadulterated coffee bliss.

Milk Frothing System

Winner: Tie

Foam makers on these machines are like familiar friends for anyone who’s used to the hands-on approach of manual steam wands. They turn the mundane task of steaming milk into a culinary spectacle, giving you that dreamy, creamy drink every time. Imagine it velvety and rich, with just the right amount of froth on top. Pure bliss!

But to step into the role of a home barista, you’re going to need a stainless steel milk jug. Sadly, this crucial accessory doesn’t come bundled with the machine, and you’ll have to get it separately to froth away and elevate your coffee game to new, delicious heights. Delonghi might have had a bit of a memory lapse.

There isn’t much room for you to experiment with the espresso extraction process. If there’s one thing you can tweak with these machines, it’s the shot volume, and that is all. All other settings are pre-set and cannot be changed.
