The reason being that the Jura ENA Micro 90 has limited water tank space, bean hopper space. So it cannot compete with the Jura D6 that is built for those who drink a lot of coffee every day. Even though the Jura D6 is the cheaper competitor.

The Jura D6 has better cleaning features and is an overall well-designed espresso maker for home use. It shares the P.E.P. espresso feature and the same temperature controls as the ENA Micro 90 which give it a good name among its users.

Jura D6 vs ENA Micro 90: Differences

The Jura D6 wins 3 – 2 against the ENA Micro 90. While the latter is a fine choice, I don’t see it keeping up with daily espresso needs. It’s good for someone who occasionally likes to drink a cup of espresso a day. What you can buy the ENA Micro 90 for is its customization for espresso taste.

The Jura D6, on the other hand, is built for intense use – up to 4 to 6 espressos a day is a breeze to make with the D6. It offers limited coffee customizations, fewer strength levels, but it’s more user-friendly and easy to maintain.

1. Flavor Of Coffee

The Winner: Jura ENA Micro 90

Coffee Grinder

There are plenty of things to love in an espresso maker like the Jura D6. But one thing that you probably won’t love so much is the coffee grinder, at least not in comparison to the ENA Micro 90 since it has a better one.

The former features an Aroma G2 grinder which is good but not as good as the Aroma G3. It is the G2’s upgrade so if there are any gaps in performance with the G2, the G3 improves upon them immediately.

So it certainly sets the bar high. The Aroma G3 grinder is fast, from start to finish, and it is quiet. The blades rotate at a faster speed and cover more area inside the grinder to ensure that nothing gets left behind.

Many users of the Aroma G2 have complained about the beans not grinding 100%; that there is more ground residue after brewing. With the G3, you won’t have to clean up. It leaves the grinder empty and ready for the next cup.

Coffee Strength

The Jura D6 features 4 levels of coffee strength. You can select how strong or balanced or mild you want your coffee. The adjustments are for every cup so you can change it any time you want.

While this is a good feature to have in a home espresso maker, it’s quite beginner-friendly. The ENA Micro 90 features 10 levels instead of 4. Offering more flexibility to picking how strong you want the espresso to taste. And for picky espresso drinkers, you can intricately select the espresso strength without settling.

Brewing Technology

There is a slight difference in how the Jura D6 prepares coffee. Even though it boasts of PEP technology for brewing a delicious espresso shot. The D6 does not employ the PEP when brewing coffee, which is a longer shot.

In a long coffee shot, the machine will produce up to 8 ounces of black coffee in a single cup. Or you can do two servings of 4 ounces each in two espresso cups.

Having said that, the taste and aroma of such a coffee is still strong and delicious because the Jura D6 grinds and brews coffee immediately. It’s better than a pod machine. Only that the ENA Micro 90 uses PEP to produce a robust and aromatic coffee flavor, even for longer coffees.

2. Dose Control

The Winner: Jura D6

Jura D6 Dose Control

The Jura D6 is closer to the professional standard of brewing espresso at home and in baristas. It doses 5g to 16g which is impressively consistent with most high-end modern espresso machines.

The optimal range of an espresso shot is between 18g to 21g.

The ENA Micro 90 has a smaller dose which might result in weak-tasting espresso and coffee for a lot of people – 6g to 10g. With strength control, you can alter this as per your personal taste.

Also, there is no twin brewing in the Jura ENA Micro 90. This means you cannot brew 2 shots side-by-side as its spout is only single-serve. With the Jura D6, you can brew 2 shots simultaneously as it has a dual spout for that very purpose.

3. Milk System

The Winner: Jura D6

The Jura D6 comes with a Fine Foam Frother with built-in, pre-programmed integrated cleaning cycles. So all the internal tubes and other parts of the frothing device gets automatically cleaned.

As for the milk temperature and texture, the Jura D6 produces richer milk foam with more milk customizations.

The Jura ENA Micro 90 features an automatic siphon milk frother. But it has many gaping holes in its performance! It demands more maintenance. It would be better if you cleaned the frother every day, after use, by rinsing the nozzle. If you don’t do this, there can be a “funky” odor or flavor in your milk during the second cup.

Both frothers produce really hot and light, creamy frothed milk. But maintenance is necessary more in the ENA Micro 90 than the D6.

4. Cleaning & Maintenance

The Winner: Jura D6

Again, the Jura D6 comes with intuitive features that make cleaning easy and convenient. The integrated cleaning cycle is coupled with an automatic shut-off timer. With the D6, a tablet through the chute to auto-rinse all its internal parts is enough to get the job done. The machine also lets you know when to empty out the drip tray and the dreg box.

The Jura ENA Micro 90, on the other hand, automatically cleans the internal pipes only after you turn the machine off. And there is no automatic shut-off timer for the machine to do it on its own.

The ENA Micro 90 does have a low energy mode to save energy. And both machines come with a water filter to keep the water scale-free and clean so it doesn’t affect the flavor of espresso.

5. Utilities

The Winner: Jura ENA Micro 90

Pre-Ground Coffee

On top of the coffee strength levels and fast Aroma G3 grinder, the ENA Micro 90 also comes with a by-pass doser for pre-ground coffee. The Jura D6 doesn’t. With the 10 coffee strength settings, you can brew pre-ground coffee any way you want.

Height Adjustments

The Jura ENA Micro 90 can accommodate taller mugs and even a travel mug. Its coffee spout is adjustable from 2.2 inches to 5.4 inches. The Jura D6 has plenty of room on its drip tray but the coffee spout stops at 4.3 inches – it can’t go any higher.

Now, with most home espresso machines, you want this level of flexibility so you can brew directly into your favorite mug. With the ENA Micro 90, this just means you can also brew into a larger mug or a travel mug without losing any time.

Control Panel

At the top of the Jura ENA Micro 90 is a new and improved control panel which the Jura D6 does not have. Yes, both feature a digital plain text display with a rotary dial. But the Jura ENA Micro 90 comes with labeled button clots at the top. This makes accessibility a whole lot easier for beginners. You know exactly what you’re choosing and the customizations go a lot smoother than expected with a rotary dial.

Size

Here’s the catch… the Jura D6 is bigger in size which means less refills. It has a 1.8L water tank and a 7-ounce bean hopper. And a 16 pucks container which makes cleaning less time-consuming.

But the Jura ENA Micro 90 has a smaller frame and construction which is compact and ideal for home use. But this also means that you have to refill water and beans more often. If you’re okay with that, I think the ENA Micro 90 makes a user-friendly and portable brewer for narrow kitchens.  It can also store up to 10 used coffee pucks.

Jura D6 vs ENA Micro 90: Similarities

1. Interface

A rotary dial and plain text display are important features that’ll help you customize and select all your espresso drinks on both machines – the Jura D6 vs ENA Micro 90. But they also have other features in common that you probably didn’t know about.

2. Brewing Technology

The Pulse Extraction Process is one of them. It’s a straightforward and efficient espresso extraction system that lets the freshly ground coffee marinate in hot water, but in much smaller quantities than conventional espresso makers. This pulls all the natural oils of coffee along with a strong and long-lasting aroma.

Both the Jura D6 and ENA Micro 90 have this. This feature is a blend of time and intensity that produces delicious espresso.

3. Customizations

Next up we have the programmable coffee volume and strength settings on both machines. This means you can change how much coffee you want and how strong/balanced you want the coffee to taste.

Some people prefer a stronger punch of espresso with their milk-based drinks such as a cappuccino or a latte. And for black coffee, a milder flavor is generally preferred. That’s where the beauty of adjusting the strength of coffee comes in. And modern espresso machines let you do so easily, no matter what type of beans you use.

4. Siphon Milk System

A siphon milk system is different from a steam wand. It pulls milk into its milk chamber to froth it, inside the espresso machine, and then it pours out frothed milk from the coffee spout. This is more user-friendly and maintenance-free.

To clean a siphon milk frothing device, you only need to drop a tablet into the chamber and the machine takes care of the rest.

The Jura D6 and ENA Micro 90 feature a siphon milk frothing system. It’s fast, convenient, and ideal for frothing all types of milk.
