Jura ENA 8 vs Micro 90: Differences

The Jura ENA 8 wins (2 – 0) against the Micro 90. It has more coffee options with a wider range of volume adjustments. It has quick and timely automated cleaning functions that prevent the need for descaling. And it’s extremely compatible with medium and dark roast coffee beans.

1. Dose Control

+Coffee Specialties

Let’s talk drinks. What’s the first drink you think of when I say ‘espresso’?  If it’s a shot of espresso or a lungo, then both espresso makers the Jura ENA 8 and Micro 90 will suit you. But when you picture a creamy latte or a cappuccino or a flat white, then the ENA 8 has better options.

This is because the ENA 8 features 10 coffee drinks while the Micro 90 presents 6 drinks. The latter does include One-Touch drinks as well such as cappuccino, latte macchiato. But the ENA 8 offers flat white which is another delicious creamy milk espresso drink.

The real difference between these two espresso makers lies in the size or volume of espresso. Favouring the ENA 8 which offers the shortest and longest espresso drink at the touch of a button.

+Dosage

You will be glad to know that the Jura ENA 8 offer more espresso than the Micro 90. This refers to how much espresso you can make in one cup.

The quantity of espresso that the Jura ENA 8 dispenses is between .5 ounces to 6 ounces. While the Jura Micro 90 dispenses from .5 ounces to 2.7 ounces.

The ability to make more espresso out of a single brewing cycle is one of the things that make the Jura ENA 8 such a brilliant and user-friendly pick.

You can do a 6 ounce shot of espresso over ice cubes and cold water/milk to make an iced coffee. The Jura ENA 8 also makes a delicious mug of creamy macchiato that you can make iced with ice cubes in a glass, instead of a mug!

With the Jura Micro 90, you will have to double brew to make an espresso shot of about 5.4 ounces. And since both espresso machines do not have dual coffee spouts, making an iced latte or cappuccino on the Micro 90 will take some time.

2. Utilities

+Hot Water Programmability

Not a lot of people know about this but some Jura espresso makers come with 3 levels of hot water temperatures for infusing espresso with hot water. You can also use this hot water to make tea and hot chocolate.

The Jura ENA 8 comes with such intricate and versatile programmability. But the Micro 90 does not.

They both, however, have adjustable strength, brewing temperature, and volume settings. Only the ENA 8 lets you set the temperature for hot water as per your personal taste.

+Interface

The Jura ENA 8 is more sleek and modern looking than the Micro 90’s control panel. The former features a TFT colour display with buttons. The display has certain coffee icons that clearly show the drink you’re brewing.

If it’s a cappuccino, for example, you can see the small cappuccino icon with frothed milk and espresso at the bottom. It looks delicious and now it’s just a touch of a button away.

The buttons feel sturdy and durable. Though the machine is made of plastic and steel, it’s quite strong and scratch-resistant.

Moving on to the Micro 90, it has a plain text display that sits on the top of the machine, not in the front where a control panel should be.

Next to the plain text display are the buttons that give you access to the functions. If you look at the display, it reads like a digital display of a calculator or intercom. No fancy coffee icons. You press the button allotted to the specific coffee drink such as cappuccino, hot water, latte macchiato, and espresso. And the machine will make that drink for you.

The milk spout sits right next to the coffee spout (on both machines) so you don’t have to move the cup to make an espresso-milk drink.

Overall, I found the interface of the Jura ENA 8 to be more intuitive and responsive than the Micro 90. And it’s good to look at as well considering Jura’s modern design.

Jura ENA 8 vs Micro 90: Similarities

1. Brewing Technology

Both machines feature 15 bar pump, Pulse Extraction Process, and Thermoblock at the forefront for brewing delicious espresso every day.

If you’re an avid espresso drinker, you need these features in your home espresso machine. This is what all barista-style espresso tastes at home and how you’d like to brew it without losing flavour, richness, and aroma in espresso.

In fact, the Jura ENA 8 and Micro 90 let you pull both espresso and coffee drinks out of this exquisite pulse brewing system. So even your plain black coffee tastes barista-like.

2. Coffee Grinder

The Jura ENA 8 and Micro 90 feature the Aroma G3 grinder with a by-pass doser for pre-ground coffee. This grinder comes with 6 grind settings and 6 to 10g of dosage per shot.

If you’re searching for the professional standard for an aromatic and full-bodied espresso, this is it.

You’ll have no complaints about the Aroma G3 grinder. It’s quiet, sturdy, durable, and very, very easy to clean. The blades stay sharp and smooth, allowing the machine to grind beans beautifully each time before brewing. This also supports the machine’s pulse brewing technology that pulls maximum flavour and aroma out of the beans – be it oily or non-oily.

The pre-programmed settings on the grinder and brewing parameters let you experiment with tons of different espresso flavours. Allowing you to make your coffee extra strong, balanced, light, or somewhere in between.

3. Utilities

Features like the cup clearance (2.2 to 5.4 inches), automatic shut-off, smart app connect, and cleaning indicators on both machines are the same.

They also use the same water filter – CLEARYL – which gets rid of tough heavy metals in the water and mineral deposits. But I would still recommend using filtered water to double your chances of preventing descaling the machine regularly.

Considering how efficient and responsive both the ENA 8 and Micro 90 are, you won’t need to descale it for weeks on end.
