Philips 3200 Lattego Vs Delonghi Magnifica XS: Which Espresso Machine Makes Better Milk-Based Drinks?

I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Read more

Philips 3200 Lattego vs Delonghi Magnifica XS is the next debate over espresso machines that we will decide the winner of. For me, the Philips 3200 LatteGo is the final winner.

Philips 3200 LatteGo excels in delivering quality espresso and milk-based beverages. Its one-touch drink options have made the entire brewing process incredibly convenient. What impresses me the most is its LatteGo system, which simplifies the preparation of milk-based drinks to a great extent.

On the other hand, the DeLonghi Magnifica XS is certainly capable of producing balanced espresso. It boasts the Panarello wand, which allows you to customize the milk texture to your preference. This feature will undoubtedly appeal to many coffee enthusiasts seeking that extra level of control.

Philips 3200 Lattego vs Delonghi Magnifica XS: Review & Comparison

In the face-off between the Philips 3200 Lattego vs Delonghi Magnifica XS, the Philips 3200 wins against the Magnifica XS with a score of 2-0 and 3 ties. Continue reading for an in-depth review.

Coffee Flavor & Brewing System

The Winner: Tie

Grinder

Philips 3200 Lattego and Delonghi Magnifica XS use conical burr grinders to grind freshly roasted beans. But the materials are different. Philips 3200 Lattego’s grinder is made of ceramic, while Delonghi Magnifica Xs’s is made of steel.

With a ceramic grinder, we can maintain the flavor of the beans and avoid negatively changing the final flavor because it generates less heat. As for steel grinders, this material is indeed more durable than ceramic. But steel is much more prone to self-heating. Thus, a grinder made of this material tends to roast the beans further and make the espressos more bitter and taste burnt.

These machines offer a range of grind settings that allow you to customize your coffee to your taste. The Philips 3200 boasts 12 grind settings, while the DeLonghi Magnifica offers 13. Sounds impressive, right? Well, in my case, I don’t really require such an extensive range of options. In fact, when I experimented with the finest smoothness setting on the DeLonghi Magnifica XS, it did struggle a bit. The finest levels could sometimes cause the grinder to jam.

Another aspect to keep in mind is the noise level. Both grinders tend to be a bit on the loud side. This might not be a big deal for everyone, but it can be a bit disruptive if you have kids at home or if you’re an early riser trying not to wake up your partner.

Now, let’s talk about a feature that I find incredibly practical – the bypass doser. Both of these machines come equipped with it, conveniently located inside the bean hopper. This allows you to use pre-ground coffee when you run out of whole beans or want to switch between different coffee varieties.

Heating System

The Philips 3200 LatteGo is only equipped with a single boiler heating system, and that means there’s a bit of a pause between brewing coffee and frothing milk, usually around 10 seconds. While it’s not a huge problem, there have been times when I’ve been in a rush, and I’ve wished that the Philips 3200 could serve up my coffee a tad quicker.

Meanwhile, the Magnifica XS boasts a twin boiler heating system. But having two boilers doesn’t mean it can brew coffee and froth milk into your cup simultaneously; they can’t. However, the presence of two dedicated boilers for these functions still helps shorten the waiting time between these two processes compared to machines with a single boiler.

Design & Convenience

The Winner: Tie

When it comes to size, there’s not a substantial difference between the two. Both machines have a compact size that sits comfortably on your kitchen counter without taking up too much space. The Philips 3200 stands about 3 inches taller than the DeLonghi Magnifica XS. So, I think you should measure the space between your kitchen counter and cabinets to ensure they fit seamlessly into your kitchen setup.

When it comes to their appearance, both machines are predominantly made of plastic. While I personally have a preference for coffee makers with a metal finish, I do recognize that expecting that level of luxury from these entry-level machines might be a bit unrealistic.

That said, I must commend their aesthetics. Despite being primarily constructed from plastic, they still have a sleek and attractive look. They can effortlessly blend in with any kitchen decor and serve as a stylish addition to your countertop.

User Interface

The user interface is also a difference between these two machines. But one thing they all have in common is that they’re all easy to use, even if it’s your first time using them.

Starting with the DeLonghi Magnifica XS, its user interface is quite straightforward. It features just two rows of buttons and a rotational dial in the middle.

These buttons include the power button, buttons for single and double espressos, single and double coffees, and a dedicated button for steaming milk. The central dial is your go-to for selecting coffee strength.

The user interface of the Philips 3200 LatteGo is just as straightforward. When you look at its user interface, you’ll notice a collection of buttons, each serving a specific function. So it will be very easy for you to use it.

Capacity

In terms of capacity, both the Philips 3200 LatteGo and the DeLonghi Magnifica XS are perfectly tailored for home use. Their capacity is not high, but considering their compact size, it is quite impressive.

I tend to drink several cups daily, and I found that I have to refill these tanks and bean hoppers quite frequently. But it’s not a big deal whatsoever. This process can be done easily and quickly because they have a clever front-loading setup.

When it comes to automatic coffee makers, convenience is highly valued. That convenience also comes from the fact that they provide one-touch drinks.

In this regard, the Philips 3200 LatteGo wins. It offers more preset drinks compared to the DeLonghi Magnifica XS, such as Cappuccino, Latte Macchiato, and Americano. Of course, you can still make these drinks with the DeLonghi Magnifica XS, but it does require a few more steps compared to the easy one-button operation of the 3200 LatteGo.

So, I think the Philips 3200 LatteGo is perfect for folks who might want to enjoy a cappuccino or latte without having to master the steaming and frothing skills of a barista, which can be a bit intimidating with the Panarello on the DeLonghi Magnifica XS.

What’s more, the Philips 3200 LatteGo also offers more flexibility when it comes to adjusting beverage parameters. You can fine-tune the coffee strength, coffee volume, temperature, and milk volume to your liking. On the other hand, the DeLonghi Magnifica XS only lets you adjust the coffee strength and volume, which is a bit more limited in comparison.

Milk System

The Winner: Philips 3200 LatteGo

Philips 3200 Lattego Vs Delonghi Magnifica XS: Milk system

The Philips 3200 LatteGo’s milk system is truly something special. The first thing that struck me was its remarkable design. The heart of this system is the LatteGo itself, consisting of a milk bottle and a single milk dispenser.

Instead of wrestling with cumbersome milk frothers or dealing with the complexities of frothing milk manually, the LatteGo operates entirely automatically. It draws milk directly from the bottle and blends it with air to create a milk texture that’s perfectly suited to your chosen coffee beverage. I find using this milk system so convenient and easy.

And the milk system of the DeLonghi Magnifica XS is a Panarello wand. Experienced coffee makers prefer this setup because it allows them to control their milk system. However, if you are an unskilled person, I’m afraid this milk system may not be suitable for you.

In the end, I still prefer the Philips 3200 LatteGo automatic milk system. A cup of latte or cappuccino in the morning? I believe everyone wants to have their drink right away instead of having to hold their own cup to froth or steam milk on busy mornings while getting ready for work. It’s all about convenience!

Regarding milk quality, I also appreciate Philips’ milk quality more than DeLonghi’s. The LatteGo system works exceptionally well, producing decently frothed or steamed milk. To achieve the same quality milk texture as the Philips 3200 on a DeLonghi machine, you would certainly need some skills.

Cleaning & Maintenance

The Winner: Tie

Speaking of cleaning and maintenance, these machines are on par.

To begin with, both of these coffee makers are compatible with water filters. Using a water filter significantly reduces the frequency of descaling.

However, the filter isn’t a one-time fix. You’ll need to replace it every month or two, depending on your water hardness level. It certainly adds up to the overall cost over time. It’s something to bear in mind, especially if you’re mindful of your budget.

I have an alternative approach: I often opt for using filtered water in the first place, eliminating the need for a filter. This method is not only highly effective but also cost-effective.

Furthermore, cleaning and maintaining these machines is a breeze thanks to their removable components, including the water tank, drip tray, and even the brew group. You can effortlessly remove these parts and rinse them thoroughly under running water.
